This 32-hour Advanced Wilderness First Aid course offers everything in the 16-hour WFA course, plus a more thorough discussion of a larger variety of topics & more hands-on practice for students. This course is designed to teach participants to deal with emergency situations involving life-threatening conditions in locations 60 minutes or further away from definitive care, or professional Emergency Medical Services. The course combines classroom-style lecture, skills practice, and role-playing to teach the response steps and treatment of injuries and illnesses in various medical and traumatic situations. Students will learn to prioritize care, treat injuries in the field and to create a plan which will encompass evacuating the patient to definitive care. The course follows the recommended curriculum set forth by the Wilderness Medical Society and exceeds the requirements for the Boy Scouts of America and most other organizations. Prerequisite: CPR certification.

This course is generally only taught in the San Antonio, TX area. Courses can be conducted outside the San Antonio, TX area for an additional cost. Please confer with ICCS staff prior to purchasing this course if you require a different location.

The description for the 16-hour WFA course is as follows:

The 16-hour Wilderness First Aid course is designed to introduce you to the concepts of medical care in a wilderness setting. The course focuses on skills, practice and realistic scenarios through hands-on skills and simulations to teach you scene and patient assessment, basic and advanced first aid techniques, CPR, AED and basic life support skills, minor trauma, environmental topics, allergic and toxic reactions, wound care, bandaging (classic and improvised), bone and joint injuries, splinting, head and spine injuries (assessment and decision making) and other “common” medical emergencies. The course follows the recommended curriculum set forth by the Wilderness Medical Society and fulfills the requirements for the Boy Scouts of America and most other organizations. Prerequisite: CPR certification.
